![]() Machir Bay is on the west coast of the island and the perfect spot to take in a sunset with the water lapping at your feet. If secluded bays and miles of sandy beaches are more your thing, Islay does not disappoint. Most of the distilleries offer tours and tastings but it’s best to book in advance to make sure you don’t miss out. I’d recommend finishing at Ardbeg to enjoy the atmosphere in the courtyard where you’ll find The ARDstream in the summer months – a converted airstream playing great music and serving food and drink including wood fired pizza, pies, and local beers. In Port Ellen, the three-mile Three Distilleries Pathway makes for an easy walk or cycle between Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. To the west of the island is Kilchoman, the only independent farm distillery that uses barley grown in surrounding fields to produce whisky that is bottled on site, and Bruichladdich in Port Charlotte which is also home to The Botanist gin. Unfortunately, the third distillery in this area, Caol Ila, was closed for renovation when I was there so I’ll have to check it out on my next visit! Bunnahabhain is a mile and a half further north of Ardnahoe and situated in a particularly beautiful spot on the water overlooking Jura. If you’re into whisky, Islay is the dream! With nine distilleries on the island, dating from 1779 to 2018 and ranging from not-very-peaty to blow-yer-heid-off, there’s bound to be something to take your fancy.īowmore is the oldest distillery and sits on the shore of Loch Indaal, with Ardnahoe the newest kid in town on the east coast and too young to even have its own whisky yet. There’s lots to see and do on Islay but here are eight of the best things I did during my four-night trip. Everyone I met took the time to chat and say hello, but my favourite part was returning a wave and a smile from every passing driver on the road! Beautiful Islay is the southernmost of the islands in the Inner Hebrides and home to some of the friendliest locals I’ve ever come across on my travels around Scotland.
